Carlos Sainz issues first statement after signing for Williams

Carlos Sainz's move to Williams comes after a competitive pursuit from several teams, including Sauber/Audi and Alpine. Ultimately, it was the ambitious project led by Williams' Team Principal James Vowles that convinced Sainz to commit to the team. This decision not only marks a new chapter in Sainz's career but also aligns him with a team undergoing significant transformation.

“I am very happy to announce that I will be joining Williams Racing from 2025 onwards. It is no secret that this year’s driver market has been exceptionally complex for various reasons and that it has taken me some time to announce my decision," Carlos Sainz said.

“However, I am fully confident that Williams is the right place for me to continue my F1 journey and I am extremely proud of joining such a historic and successful team, where many of my childhood heroes drove in the past and made their mark on our sport. The ultimate goal of bringing Williams back to where it belongs, at the front of the grid, is a challenge that I embrace with excitement and positivity.”

The agreement will see Carlos Sainz racing for Williams in the 2025 and 2026 seasons, providing the team with much-needed continuity during a period of major regulation changes. These changes include a new aerodynamic profile and the introduction of sweeping new power unit rules, emphasizing the use of 100% sustainable fuel.

Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, had signed a new contract with Mercedes in the summer of 2023, securing his place with the squad until the end of 2025. However, he exercised a release clause in his contract, allowing him to sign with Ferrari. He will join Ferrari after completing his final season with Mercedes in 2024.
