opening leg was 'Triple Mix', where athletes set off in a mass start and over three sts go 'swim-bike-run', 'run-bike-swim' and make ir way to finish in a pursuit style 'bike-swim-run'.

championship also features a team competition for first time, with five teams of eight athletes competing for points over various sts.

men's race came down to a dramatic showdown between French former Super League champion Vincent Luis of Scorpions, home favourite Jonny Brownlee of Cheetahs and Sharks front man Hayden Wilde of New Zealand.

22 year-old Wilde, individual bronze medalist from Tokyo used his 'short chute' - a form of time bonus - to perfection to get away from Luis and Brownlee in closing sts of final run and take gold medal.

Luis came home second, with Brownlee third.

series continues in Munich, Germany next weekend, moving on to Jersey for round three and concluding in Malibu, USA at end of month.
