It was a ‘Chak De! India’ moment as the Indian Women’s Hockey Team put up a fine performance to not just win the FIH Series Finals tournament, but also qualify for the finals of the Olympics 2020 qualifiers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team for their achievement, terming it an ‘Exceptional game, excellent outcome!’. Describing the win as ‘stupendous’, PM wrote that the feat would popularise hockey and inspire young girls to excel in the sport.
Moments after the victory, PM Modi tweeted, “Exceptional game, excellent outcome! Congratulations to our team for winning the Women's FIH Series Finals hockey tournament. This stupendous victory will further popularise hockey and also inspire many young girls to excel in the sport.”
India beat Japan 3-1 on their opponent’s turf at the Hiroshima Hockey Stadium. Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur’s two goals, in the 45th and 60th minute, turned out to be the difference between the two teams. Captain Rani Rampal had given India an early lead with a goal in the third minute.
The proud winners even deservingly celebrated their victory by singing and dancing in the team bus.
India had entered the FIH Olympic Qualifiers 2019 when they beat Chile on Saturday to enter the finals of the FIH Series Finals tournament.
