Hockey: Instances of India hosting the World Cup in the past
The Indian Hockey Federation has presented a bid to host the FIH Men's World Cup in 2023. The former world champions have hosted the event thrice before.

International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed on Thursday that it has received a bid from India to host Men’s Hockey World Cup which is scheduled to be held in 2023. In past, India has hosted three Hockey World Cups. This includes 1982 World Cup held in Mumbai, Maharashtra; 2010 World Cup in New Delhi and 2018 Hockey World Cup held at Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, making m strong contenders to win hosting rights for marquee event once again.

1982 Men's World Cup, Mumbai
1982 Men's Hockey World Cup was fifth edition of Hockey World Cup. Pakistan won tournament for third time by defeating West Germany 3–1 in final. Hosting tournament for first time, India failed to qualify for semis after being ranked third behind Australia and Nerlands in Pool A standings. Losing to both se sides ended hosts' run after wins against Malaysia, erstwhile Soviet Union and England. In classification match, India beat Soviet Union again to finish fifth in tournament.

2010 Men’s World Cup, New Delhi
2010 Men's Hockey World Cup was 12th edition of Men's Hockey World Cup. Australia won tournament after defeating Germany 2–1 in final. It was Kangaroos' second World Cup win after ir maiden title in 1986. Nerlands won ir third-place match by defeating England 4–3. Hosting tournament for second time, India started ir campaign by thrashing Pakistan 4-1 in Delhi. However, it all went downhill from re as y lost ir next three games to Australia, Spain and England before salvaging some pride with a 3-3 draw with South Africa to finish Pool B at fourth place. In final standings, India finished eighth after losing ir play-off match to Argentina 2-4.

2018 Men's Hockey World Cup was 14th edition of Hockey World Cup, Belgium won tournament for first time after defeating Nerlands 3–2 in a penalty shoot-out in final Defending champions Australia won ir third-place match by defeating England 8–1. In quarter-finals, Nerlands beat India 2-1 at Kalinga Stium in Bhubaneswar, ending hosts' hope of winning World Cup on home soil for first time.
