Japan's PM to speak with IOC chief over Olympics future amid coronavirus crisis

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will hold a phone call with IOC President on March 24 as calls for postponement of 2020 Tokyo Olympics grows stronger.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will hold a phone call with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President at 4:30pm (IST) on March 24 as calls for postponement of 2020 Tokyo Olympics grows stronger in wake of coronavirus pandemic. Abe will talk to Thomas Bach after latter hinted at a possible postponement of global event with rising cases of coronavirus across world.

On March 22, IOC’s executive board anunced that committee will step up its scenario planning for Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. board emphasised that cancellation is t nda as it would t solve any of problems or help anybody. However, it said that IOC will start detailed discussions to complete its assessment of evolving health crisis worldwide and its impact on Olympic Games, including scenario of postponement.

Letter to athletes

After board meeting, Bach wrote a letter to global athlete community to provide m with an explanation of IOC’s approach. Calling it an unprecedented crisis, IOC president said that y have me it ir leing principle to safeguard health of everyone involved and to contribute to containing virus.

Bach ackwledged tremendous uncertainty around global health crisis and said that it “rocks our nerves and raises or strengns doubts about a positive future”. He ded that body at this moment can really make fully reliable statements about duration of this fight against virus.

“refore also IOC can unfortunately t answer all your questions. This is why we are relying on vice of a Task Force including World Health Organization (WHO).” wrote IOC president.

IOC’s statement has hinted at possible postponement of event which was earlier denied by Japanese Prime Minister and or authorities related to Olympic Games. Abe h told G7 leers that Japan is doing everything in power to prepare for games and y want to aim for a complete event as proof that “mankind can defeat new coronavirus”.
