Mary Kom's review appeal gets turned down; bronze medal confirmed

India's leading boxer, Mary Kom and representatives of the Indian side appealed against the referee's decision on the winner of the match. Mary Kom lost the semi-finals to Busenaz Cakiroglu of Turkey 1-4. She won the bronze medal, adding to the already shinning tally of six golds and a silver medal.

Appeal turned down

After the match ended, India appealed the decision by raising a 'yellow card' to the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to review the match and rethink the result of the match. However, it was turned down by the authorities since as per the regulations, an appeal can be granted only in the scoreline read 3-2 or 3-1. The 'yellow card' raised was not accepted by the technical committee. Kom does not seem to be accepting the final even after the appeal and took it upon herself to express her dissatisfaction. In a Twitter post a few minutes after the match, she shared the link of the fight.

The bronze medal, which was her eighth medal at the World Boxing Championships, makes her have the highest number of medals across both - men's and women's categories.

More medals for India

India's campaign at the World Championships does not, however, end with her loss. Later on Saturday, World Championship debutant Manju Rani will face Thailand’s Raksat Chuthamat in 48 kg semifinal, Jamuna Boro will be up against Taiwan’s Hsiao-Wen Huang in the 54 kg semifinal and Lovlina Borgohain will face China’s Liu Yang in 69 kg semifinal.

Mary Kom has an Olympic bronze medal (2012), five Asian titles, gold medals at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games to her name, besides numerous other international top finishes.

In a recent press release, the AIBA stated that boxers from 21 nations secure medals at the World Boxing Championships, with the top three being Russia with 6 athletes, China with 5 and India with 4 boxers.
