'I think this could be it': Dustin Poirier makes HONEST admission after UFC 302 loss to Makhachev

Dustin Poirier after losing in the main event to Islam Makhachev via a submission in the final round has made honest admission over his retirement from UFC.

One of the greatest legends in UFC history, Dustin Poirier has confirmed that his loss against Islam Makhachev in the main event of UFC 302 could well be his last fight in the MMA promotion as he looks to hang up his gloves from the Octagon. 

Heading into UFC 302, there was a sense of belief among Dustin Poirier that his Lightweight Championship bout against Islam Makhachev could be his last shot at winning the belt.

And ‘The Diamond' was really close to upsetting the odds as he had the Champion Islam Makhachev in all sorts of trouble in the fifth and final round. Islam Makhachev endured some heavy damage and looked like he might concede his belt but in an impressive turnaround and grabbed Dustin Poirier for a D’arce choke and won by submission.

Dustin Poirier confirms UFC 302 could be his last fight 

As Dustin Poirier lost the fight he was embraced by none other than Khabib Nurmagomedov. ‘The Diamond’ has enjoyed a stellar career in UFC with 50 fights and in his post fight Octagon interview with Joe Rogan Dustin Rhodes confirmed that this could well have been his last time inside the Octagon. 

“I mean I know I can compete with the best of these guys. It's just like If I do fight again, What am I fighting for? Just to fight , I've done that 50 times. You know I don't know and I got a little girl I love and I got to see, I think this could be it. Honestly Joe”, said an emotional Dustin Poirier.

While, Dustin Poirier confirmed that he is not sure that this really was his last fight or not, but if it was then he took a moment to thank his family for all their support.  

“And I'm not 100% but if this is my last fight then I want to dedicate this journey to the people who made me the man I am and that's the women in my life. To my Grandmother, I miss you everyday and I know I am still protected by your prayers. To my mother, we've had a crazy life. I love you, thanks for always having my back and to my wife, I love you so much. I wouldn't be standing here without you”, said the Diamond.

If this indeed was Dustin Poirier's last fight then UFC fans will fondly remember a heck of a career and one of the fiercest competitors MMA has ever seen.
