Indian superstar Neeraj Chopra on Monday won the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest. Chopra won the historic gold in the men's javelin event with a throw of 88.17m in his second attempt. With the victory, Chopra became the first Indian to win the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem (87.82m) secured the second spot, while Jakub Vadlejch (86.67m) of the Czech Republic won the bronze medal.

Neeraj Chopra wins historic gold for India

In the final on Monday midnight, Neeraj Chopra began with a foul throw on his initial attempt. However, he swiftly rebounded, delivering an exceptional performance on his second try, which turned out to be the best throw of the event. With a remarkable distance of 88.17m, Chopra solidified his lead on the table.

Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem secured the second position overall, achieving a distance of 87.82m on his third attempt. The third spot went to Jakub Vadlejch, who managed a throw of 86.67m on his fifth and final attempt. Here's the moment when Chopra registered his best throw of the final to win the gold medal.

Chopra, the current no.1 in the javelin world rankings, had won the Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 but finished with a silver at the worlds in Eugene last year, as Anderson Peters had clinched the gold. The only other Indian to win a medal at the worlds was Anju Bobby George, who took bronze in the women's long jump in 2003 in Paris.
