Neeraj Chopra earned the gold medal on Monday in the Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships. In the men's javelin competition, Chopra won the first-ever gold medal with a throw of 88.17 metres on his second try. Chopra's triumph marked the first time an Indian had ever won the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan (87.82m) came in second, and Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic (86.67m) took home the bronze.

Neeraj Chopra captures a historic gold medal for India in the WAC 2023

Neeraj Chopra started the Monday night final with a foul throw on his first try. He quickly recovered, though, and on his second attempt—which ended up being the greatest throw of the competition—he gave an outstanding effort. Chopra extended his lead on the table with a fantastic distance of 88.17m.

Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan took second place overall after clearing a distance of 87.82m on his third try. Jakub Vadlejch took third place with a throw of 86.67 metres on his fifth and final try. Chopra, the current world number one in the javelin, earned the Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 but finished second at the worlds in Eugene last year, while Anderson Peters took the gold. Anju Bobby George, who won bronze in the women's long jump in 2003 in Paris, was the only other Indian to earn a medal at the championships.
