India's para-athletes continue to make the nation proud on the global stage, with Rakesh Kumar emerging as one of the standout performers in Paris. Partnering with Sheetal Devi, Kumar clinched a bronze medal in the Mixed Team Compound Open Archery event, adding another chapter to India's growing legacy in para-sports.

A Life-Altering Accident and a New Beginning

Rakesh Kumar was born on January 13, 1985, in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir. His life took a tragic turn in 2010 when a severe accident left him paralyzed from the waist down, confining him to a wheelchair. The years that followed were filled with despair and uncertainty. However, in 2017, a new chapter began when he was introduced to archery at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex. 

Archery was not just a sport for Rakesh; it became his lifeline. Despite financial hardships and the challenges posed by his disability, Kumar immersed himself in the sport. Under the guidance of coach Kuldeep Kumar, he honed his skills and quickly rose through the ranks. 

Educational Pursuits Amidst Sporting Success

Rakesh Kumar's journey is not limited to the sports arena. He is also pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree at Galgotias University. Balancing academics and sports is no easy feat, but Kumar's commitment to his education reflects his determination to excel in every aspect of life.

Rakesh Kumar's rise in para-archery has been nothing short of meteoric. His international breakthrough came with a gold medal in the Mixed Team event at the 2023 World Archery Para Championship, where he showcased his exceptional skills on the global stage. This victory was followed by another stellar performance at the 2023 Asian Para Games, further solidifying his reputation as one of India's leading para-archers.
