Sheetal Devi talks about how her journey has changed perceptions of family and society

Reflecting on how her victories have impacted her family and community, Sheetal Devi shared, “Back home, my family didn’t let me go out, like it usually happens in villages. But since I’ve left home for my archery career, my parents have supported me wholeheartedly. They believe in me and my ability to do well, so they never held me back.”

Although Sheetal Devi has yet to return to her village after her Paralympic triumph, she has heard of the profound effect her journey has had on her community. “I’ve heard parents telling their daughters to be like me and play. It makes me really happy that I can inspire confidence in people and that they’ve started believing in their kids. It’s amazing to know that my success is encouraging change back home,” she added.

Sheetal’s journey to the podium has not only brought pride to her family but has also sparked a new belief in girls and young athletes in her village, challenging traditional norms. Teaming up with Rakesh Kumar, she secured India’s bronze medal by defeating Italy’s Matteo Bonacina and Eleonora in a thrilling match at the Invalides, finishing with a score of 156-155. The victory also equaled the previous Paralympic record set by Turkiye at the Tokyo Games.
