In a major heartbreak for India at Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from Women's 50KG Freestyle ahead of her Gold Medal match tonight against USA's Sarah Hildebrandt.

Vinesh Phogat was found 100 grams overweight post her semi final clash and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed in their statement that the 29-year old wrestler has been disqualified from competition.

The rules behind Vinesh Phogat's disqualification

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified after being found 100 grams overweight at the Paris Olympics. This means that Vinesh Phogat won't be awarded even a silver medal and her campaign ends in heartbreak.

According to the procedure followed by International Olympic Committee (IOC), wrestlers are weighed-in for their medical examination after every match. In the medical examination if a wrestler is found overweight or underweight they are disqualified from the Olympics

As per rules, Vinesh Phogat had to weigh herself twice, once during the morning of prelim rounds and other during the morning of final.

This means that Vinesh Phogat would lose her silver medal which she was guaranteed even if she would've lost the final. This year only gold medal and bronze medal would be awarded in Women's 50KG Freestyle Wrestling at Paris Olympics due to Vinesh's sudden disqualification.
