Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the final of the Paris Olympics as she has been found 100 grams overweight in Women's 50KG Freestyle ahead of her gold medal match. Vinesh Phogat was set to face USA's Sarah Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal match but has now been disqualified from the final.
Vinesh Phogat had stormed her way to the finals, however according to rules if an Wrestler is found even slightly overweight they are deemed to be disqualifed from the competition.
The IOA confirmed in their official statement that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified ahead of her gold medal match in a major blow to the country's aspirations at Paris Olympics.
“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand," said the IOA in their official statement.
Ahead of the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat was competing in women's 53KG wrestling. However, in her return to action at Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat decided to cut her weight class to compete in Women's 50KG freestyle.
