Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing: Everything to Know About Appeal-Who Are The Lawyers & When is The Hearing

India woke up to shocking news on Wednesday when wrestler Vinesh Phogat who had stormed her way to the finals of women's freestyle 50kg wrestling was disqualified from the Paris Olympics due to being overweight by 100 grams at the weigh-ins. Vinesh Phogat was not only denied a shot at an Olympic gold medal for India but she was also stripped of her secured Silver Medal. As it turned out, Vinesh Phogat appealed against the decision in the Court of Arbitration, and her appeal was accepted by CAS with a hearing set to take place soon.

What is Vinesh Phogat's appeal about?

Vinesh Phogat had filed two separate appeals to the Court Of Arbitration to hear her case against her disqualification from Paris Olympics. In her appeal, Vinesh Phogat's claim states that she should atleast be awarded a Silver Medal for her qualification into the finals. The CAS on Thursday decided to accept the appeal and confirmed that the hearing will take place on Friday as Phogat's lawers would be allowed a chance to plead her case. 

When is Vinesh Phogat's hearing with CAS? 

The hearing on Vinesh Phogat's appeal with the Court of Arbitration of Sports is set to take place on Friday, August 9th, 2024. 

What time will Vinesh Phogat's hearing with CAS take place?

Vinesh Phogat's hearing with the CAS was supposed to start at 9 AM local time in France, however, it has been reported that the hearing has been further delayed till 2PM local time. Meaning Phogat's hearing would start at around 5:30-6:00 PM IST.

The Lawyers who will represent Vinesh Phogat's case 

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) have approached Harish Salve (Senior Advocate Supreme Court, Former Solicitor General of India and King's Counsel) to represent Vinesh Phogat's case in front of CAS. Before Salve, four lawyers from Paris were representing Vinesh Phogat. Sports law expert Vidhushpat Singhania will also be a part of the case as an amicus curiae.

When will the decision arrive? 

The CAS decision usually arrives immediately after the hearing, however, if the judge isn't able to come to a decision, the decision can also be delayed until tomorrow.
