Indian grappler Vinesh Phogat suffered heartbreak as she was disqualified from the finals of the Women's 50kg Freestyle Wrestling at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics. Vinesh was found overweight by just over 100 grams on the morning of the finals and was denied permission to compete. The 29-year-old tried very hard to cut down the extra weight but her efforts went in vain.

Sanjay Singh blames Vinesh's coaching team for gaffe

Sanjay Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has issued a statement regarding the matter. Sanjay Singh has blamed Vinesh's team including the coach and the nutritionist for the gaffe. Sanjay said that it is not a fault of Vinesh but her personal coach and support staff, questioning whether they have gone there to enjoy themselves.

"Not a fault of Vinesh but her personal coach and staff. Vo sab waha tafri karne gaye hai kya: WFI president Sanjay Singh told IANS.

Vinesh Phogat was slated to fight USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the final of the Women's 50kg Freestyle Wrestling event later in the evening. However, her disqualification saw Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman whom Vinesh had defeated in the semi-final on Wednesday, getting a chance to compete for gold.

Things have been unfortunate for the Indian grappler but that doesn't take away the fact that she had been nothing but outstanding in the Paris Games. She won all the three bouts and that too in a dominating fashion. She first defeated Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan and then followed it up with a stellar victory over Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarters. In the semis, Vinesh took her game to a different level and beat Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba 5-0.

The Indian grappler was all set to become the first women's wrestler to win an Olympic gold or silver but things were not meant to be. Sakshi Malik has been the only Indian female wrestler so far to win an Olympic medal, to be specific a bronze.
