Patrick Day: American boxer dies four days after being knocked out

27-year-old American Boxer, Patrick Day passed away on Thursday after being in a coma for four days. Day sustained these injuries in a fight on Saturday.

Junior middleweight boxer Patrick Day succumbed to brain injuries on October 17. This development comes four days after Day went into a Coma after being knocked out in a fight with fellow American Charles Conwell. Day was stretchered out of the ring in the bout which took place at Chicago on Saturday. His promoter, Lou DiBella, passed a statement informing the media and the fans about the boxer's demise.

"Boxing made him feel alive"

Patrick Day was a US Olympic alternate in 2012 before he turned Pro in the following year. As a Pro, he won the WBC Continental Americas Championship in 2017 and the IBF Intercontinental Championship in 2019. He was rated among the Top 10 by both the WBC and the IBF, as of June 2019. The fight with Charles Conwell was a super-welterweight fight which was on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk vs. Chazz Witherspoon, Usyk's Heavyweight Debut. The fight, which took place in Chicago, was won by Conwell in the 10th round via a Knockout. Patrick remained down for several minutes before being stretchered out by the medics.

Promoter shares his feelings

Patrick's promoter, Lou DiBella, spoke about the boxer's demise and expressed his grief regarding the same. He talked about how the boxer was given company by his entire family as he fought for his life. DiBella also spoke about how Day, who was well educated, could have made a living in a lot of different ways but boxed for the love of it. DiBella has also been sharing tributes to the fallen champion on his Twitter.

Opponent shares grief

Day's opponent, Charles Conwell, has competed for the US in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Conwell has expressed his grief on his social media platforms as he kept sharing posts and images, praying for Day's recovery. After Day's demise, Conwell shared a post on Instagram paying tribute to Day and expressing his guilt over the turn the events of Saturday night took. Conwell ended the piece by declaring that he aspires to win a World Title for Day. The comments on Conwell's social media are filled with people offering him support and counsel.
