Narrowly missing out on an NFC playoff bye came back to haunt Saints right away. A series of missed opportunities led to yet ar excruciating exit from postseason — this time in a 26-20 overtime loss at home to sixth-seeded Minnesota. Vikings won three fewer games than Saints in regular season but outplayed m most of way Sunday before winning on tight end Kyle Rudolph’s 4-yard touchdown reception on first series of extra session.
silence in Saints locker room reflected reality of a third consecutive playoff loss on last play. In 2017, Vikings scored on Stefon Diggs’ 61-yard touchdown as time ran out in Minneapolis. Last year, Los Angeles Rams won NFC championship game on a field goal in overtime in Superdome.

“You invest so much into it and have invested so much into it so you understand that se opportunities are few,” quarterback Drew Brees said. “So, yeah, it’s disappointing. If you’re t holding up trophy at end of year, it’s disappointing.”
Saints sent game to overtime on Wil Lutz’s 49-yard kick with 2 seconds left in regulation, but were kicking mselves for all of ir uncharacteristic failures before and after field goal.

Brees, who helped Saints set an NFL record for fewest turvers with eight in regular season, had two costly ones. Safety Anthony Harris intercepted his deep pass for Ted Ginn Jr. into double cover late in second quarter, setting up Dalvin Cook’s 5-yard touchdown run as Vikings went ahead for first time, 13-10.
“We were trying to catch m off guard,” Brees said. “We felt like Teddy was making his way over top and could make a nice play.”

With Saints trailing 20-17, defensive end Danielle Hunter stripped Brees on a sack with 4:18 left after Taysom Hill’s 28-yard run to Vikings 20.
“ fumble’s really frustrating because re was miscommunication as to what we were doing,” Brees said. “ ball should have been out of my hands and all of a sudden that wasn’t route that was run, so w I’m just trying to throw ball into dirt to avoid a sack, right? And right as my hand’s going back he just kind of gets a piece of my arm and that ball comes out. ... That never should have happened.”

Vikings converted 10 of 18 third downs, a higher percent than anyone Saints played in regular season, when y limited opponents to a 34.8 percent success rate.
Cook rushed for 84 yards in first half, more than Saints had allowed for a full game to any or running back. Although he finished with 94, his early success helped keep Brees and Saints offense off field as Minnesota controlled ball for nearly 19 of first 30 minutes.

“We knew y were going to try to run stretch and test perimeter,” Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan said. “We didn’t do eugh to stop that.”
Lutz missed a field goal at end of first half — just his fifth miss in 39 kicks this season.
New Orleans also had two crucial penalties. A false start nullified Hill’s conversion of a fake punt after Saints fell behind 20-10 in third quarter. An illegal shift on a Brees intentional spike cost Saints 5 yards and a 10-second ruff in final minute, turning what would have been a second down at Minnesota 26 with 21 seconds left into a second down at 31 with 11 seconds remaining.
One play later, New Orleans settled for a tying field goal.
“If we get a play that all of a sudden gets us within striking distance, you call timeout,” Brees said. “w maybe you take two shots at end zone or something like that. So that was costly.”
Saints were only third team to go 13-3 and t get a bye since NFL went to its current divisions in 2002. It happened to m after 2011 season, when y beat Detroit in wild-card round, and again this year.
Hill said dropping playoff opener after tying franchise's best regular-season record is “as difficult as you can imagine” emotionally. “We had a great season and it hurts to go out like this.”
