The US Open 2022 tournament began with Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas battling for the World No 1 position.

Following Daniil Medvedev's loss to Nick Kyrgios on Monday, Rafael Nal was tipped to become new World 1. However, Nal's shocking exit on Tuesday meant that eir Carlos Alcaraz or Casper Rudd w stands a chance to become new World 1. Second seed Rafael Nal lost to Frances Tiafoe of US 4-6,6-4,4-6,3-6. Nal was chasing his fifth title in New York and a record-extending 23rd Grand Slam crown after winning Australian Open and French Open titles earlier this year.

Out of five Nal, Medvedev and Tsitsipas failed to reach quarter-finals. Both Carlos Alcaraz or Casper Ruud have a chance of reaching top of men’s tennis ranking if y make it to final of US Open 2022. However, Nal can still become world 1 if neir of m reaches final. If Alcaraz and Ruud meet in championship match, winner will take home trophy and top spot.

US Open: Rafael Nal vs Frances Tiafoe match highlights 

Rafael Nal vs Frances Tiafoe battle at Arthur Ashe Stium lasted for 3 hours and 31 minutes with Tiafoe earning his third Top 5 win. first set witnessed, Tiafoe finding his range hitting groundstrokes with conviction and demonstrating his agility by chasing down everything that Nal was throwing at him during match. Just like in previous matches, Nal despite being down by a set bounced back and capitalised on errors me by Tiafoe. Spaniard won second set 6-4. Tiafoe was able to put disappointment behind him and served well in third set to take a 2-1 le in match.

In fourth set, Nal raced to a 3-1 le but Tiafoe stuck worked his way back into set. Americans won next five straight games to seal victory. Tiafoe’s victory against Nal was biggest win by an American at  US Open since James Blake defeated Spaniard in third round back in 2005. 24-year-old also became  first American men's player to reach quarterfinal at Flushing Meows since John Isner in 2018 and youngest to accomplish feat since Andy Roddick in 2006.
