Daniil Medvedev & other Russian players banned from participating in Wimbledon: Report

Daniil Medvedev and other Russian tennis players will reportedly be barred from playing in the Wimbledon Championship 2022 due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

world . 2 ranked tennis player Daniil Medvedev is being linked with reports suggesting that US Open 2021 winner, alongside or Russian tennis players, will be prohibited from participating in Wimbledon Championship 2022. Wimbledon is third Grand Slam tournament of year, which is held annually at All England Club in London. As reported by Sportico, tournament will bar Russians to compete as repercussions of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which started in last week of February.

Since n, Russian athletes have faced heavy sanctions from all corners of world and as per Sportico, British Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston suggested that Medvedev and or Russian tennis players shouldn’t be allowed to compete in third Grand Slam tournament of year unless y assure that y are t supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Earlier in February, IOC recommended that Russian athletes should be banned from international competitions, which resulted in Russian teams and individuals being removed from Beijing Winter Paralympics 2022 and or major international sporting events. Wimbledon will be latest event to prevent country’s athletes from participating as a direct result of Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.

Russian football team was barred from competing in qualifiers for FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar, while Russian and Belarusian racers were barred from competing in Boston Marathon earlier this week. However, Russian and Belarusian athletes were allowed to keep competing without use of ir country’s flag or name in tennis. It is still unclear wher ban from Wimbledon will be applied to Belarusian athletes too, as Belarus opened its gate for Russian military to march into Ukraine. 

Who are top-ranked tennis players from Russia?

Alongside Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachav, and Aslan Karatsev are players to sit inside top 100 ATP men’s singles rankings. Whereas, a total of eight Russian female players find mselves inside WTA’s top 100 rankings. Rublev is currently ranked eighth in ATP rankings, and Khachav and Karatsev rank 26th and 30th respectively. On or hand, Anastasia  Pavlyuchenkova is currently ranked 15th in WTA rankings, followed by Darya Kasatkina in 26th and Darya Kudermetova in 29th, among ors.
