Marona is among rare sportspersons who transcended boundaries of sport and earned massive respect from his fellow sportspersons. Marona remains an icon for Argentinians everywhere and led national team to a World Cup win in 1986.

Diego Marona death: Juan Martin del Potro pays tribute
Marona's compatriot, tennis player Juan Martin del Potro led tributes for Argentine idol. Taking to Twitter, Del Potro wrote, “I feel that you return to place that belongs to you, HEAVEN. For me you will never die. Rest in peace”. Del Potro and Marona have declared ir miration for each or multiple times over years, with Marona writing about pair's friendship in Sebastian Torok’s book “Juan Martin del Potro: Gentle Giant”.
Marona talked about how Del Potro won hearts of every Argentinian when he guided Argentina to ir first - and only - Davis Cup title in 2016. “You could say that Martin, because I call him Martin, won my heart day he won Davis Cup. But , man, … That day he won heart of all Argentinians," revealed Marona, who h travelled to Zagreb to witness Argentina vs Croatia final.

“How was I t going to accompany him to Croatia? I would go to end of world to cheer for him and entire Argentinian team. It was bravest stop, one to try and win Davis Cup for first time in history, as a visitor, against all odds. With everything against us is how I like it!" Marona recalled.

Rafael Nal was among big names of tennis who took to social media to eulogize Diego Marona, writing, “Today world of sports in general and football, in particular, has a void. Marona was one of greatest athletes in history. What he did in football remains. My sincere and condolences to his family, world of football, and all of Argentina." He was joined by Argentinian 4-time Grand Slam winner, Guillermo Vilas who wrote that he would like to extend a big hug to his family at this sensitive moment.
