World number two Novak Djokovic addressed a press briefing ahead of the Davis Cup on Monday. The Serbian, who recently bowed out of the ATP World Tour Finals said that he missed representing his country Serbia and that the tournament is set to be an intense competition.
'Happy to represent the nation'
Djokovic, who has a 12-match winning streak at the Davis Cup, will be making his first appearance at the tournament since 2017. Serbia won the tournament in 2010 and is lead by Nenad Zimonjic. The Serbian team consists of - Djokovic, Dusan Lajovic, Filip Krajinovic, Viktor Troicki and Janko Tipsarevic. They are in Group 'A' along with France and Japan.
On Monday, Djokovic said, "Obviously I’ve had a great experience this year in Madrid. I like playing here. I like the conditions. I had an hour of practice. Everything went well. Being part of the national team is something that I always valued very much. I have not played for the Serbia national team for several years. So I missed the feeling of being with my friends, with my colleagues and the guys that create a great atmosphere. We’re going to stay hopefully until the end of the tournament and have success.”
Andy Murray, who will be representing Great Britain, will also feature in the tournament. Ahead of the tournament, Murray said, "I think a lot of us are just quite excited to see what it’s going to be like. This is something new, it’s a big change for tennis. I like how they’ve set everything up at the venue and seeing all of the players in one place with all of their team colours and team tracksuits on, it’s been cool and I hope that during the matches the atmosphere is good and lots of people come out to support and we’ll see what happens in a few days.”
