Sumit Nagal reaches his career-best ranking in latest ATP singles

The tennis player, Sumit Nagal has achieved his career-best ranking of 129 in the latest Association of Tennis Professional men's singles rankings by moving up six places on October 7. The 22-year-old tennis player has scored 435 points while playing 26 tournaments. Lately, Nagal has been in a good form and has just entered the ATP Challenger Campinas in Brazil last week. On September 30, Nagal also attained a career-best ranking of 135 after making a huge leap of 26 places. The Indian tennis player was on the news for his victory debut against Roger Federer in the US Open. Nagal is also the first Indian to defeat Federer in a Grand Slam.

ATP Challenger

Sumit Nagal defeated Facundo Bagins in the finals of the Buenos Aires Challenger and won his career's second Challenger title on September 29. With the score of 6-4, 6-2, the Indian tennis player beat the Argentine and the game was wrapped up in an hour and 37 minutes. The 22-year-old  player also took part in the men's double with Federico Coria but however, failed to qualify the quarterfinals which the score 2-6, 3-6. He has secured his second semi-final appearance in two weeks. Earlier, Nagal has defeated Cerundolo just last week during the Buenos Aires Challenger with three sets. Nagal had now moved into the second round of the tournament after his opponent Portuguese Gastao Elias retired as Nagal was leading 4-1 in the first set.

Love from across the country

Nagal's recent wins have let him a lot of praise and admiration from Indian fans and tennis lovers, worldwide including Kiren Rijju,  the Minister of State of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and Rohan Bopanna. The Union Minister tweeted that it was a brilliant performance and extended his congratulations to the 22-year-old. Bopanna also congratulated him for his "superb efforts". Nagal played in his second consecutive finals, with the first one being the Banja Luka Challenger in Bosnia & Herzegovina. He lost the final to Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
