Stefanos Tsitsipas has joined the applause for Australian Open organisers, saying it was a great idea to persevere with hosting the tournament in 2021, despite the challenges organisers faced.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has joined the applause for Australian Open organisers, saying it was a great idea to persevere with hosting the tournament in 2021, despite the challenges organisers faced.

The World No.6 says it is great to play in front of fans again, after playing most of his matches in empty stadiums during 2020.

Although not a full crowd, those who were in Rod Laver Arena on Thursday, saw the Greek prevail over tenacious local Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-4.

"He's a talent. He has huge potential. I'm pretty sure he knows it himself," Tsitsipas said.

"Despite the difficulty of the match today, I really enjoyed being out here, competing and showing the world some really good quality tennis," he said.
