US Open 2024: Sumit Nagal Battles Hard but Falls Short Against Tallon Griekspoor in Round One

Sumit Nagal's spirited performance was insufficient in US Open as Tallon Griekspoor turned out as the dominant one due to his endurance and speed in the match.

Sumit Nagal was spirited as he made his way to New York to be a part of the US Open. Amongst top draws like Novak Djokovic, Carlos ALcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Nagal is among the stars who took part in the first round of the Tennis Majors competition. Nagal was paired with Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor and displayed a valiant fight. But that was not enough for the Indian tennis star as he fell in the first round of the US Open as Nagal was no match to the Dutch Tennis star.

Valiant Sumit Nagal Bows Out of the US Open Round 1 Clash, India Star Defeated by Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor

Sumit Nagal was in action at Court 15 of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens and was locked in for a battle against Tallon Griekspoor on August 27. He put his classic forehand shots on display against the Dutchman. But Nagal's spirited showcase was not enough as the Dutchman turned out to be a dominant one due to his endurance and speed in the match-up. Nagal tried to pull off a comeback in the third set after they reached a tiebreak. But the Indian tennis star conceded three points to lose the Round One match.

Sumit Nagal lost the Round 1 match in straight sets 1-6, 3-6, 6-7 (6) against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor at Court 15. But he also made history in the process, as in the past five years, he became the first Indian to compete in the main draw of the Singles Competitions in all four major Grand Slams.

Tallon Griekspoor was utterly dominant in the first set against Nagal and the Indian tennis star fumbled with his serves in the competition. After losing out on the first two sets, Sumit pulled off a strong comeback in the third set but his errors held him back in the tie-breaker.

While Sumit Nagal's singles run at the US Open is now over, he will now feature in the men's doubles competition against Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka. They will be in action on August 29th, 2024.
