'I pray that country remains safe': Vinesh Phogat visits Golden Temple after Olympic disappointment

Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab on Friday, seeking solace and divine blessings following a tumultuous experience at the Paris Olympics 2024. Dressed in a traditional Punjabi suit and with her head covered in a saffron turban, Phogat made a humble pilgrimage to the sacred site, where she met with the jathedars of the Akal Takht and the Takht Damdama Sahib.

Vinesh Phogat pays homage at Golden Temple

Vinesh Phogat, who hails from Haryana, expressed her deep spiritual connection to the visit, saying, "It feels really good to be here today, and it has been a very positive experience. I have come to seek Waheguru's blessings. I pray that everyone around me, my loved ones, stay healthy and that our country remains safe."

Her visit comes on the heels of an emotional rollercoaster in Paris, where she made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. In a stunning performance, Vinesh Phogat defeated reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki, a victory that sent waves of pride through the nation.

However, her triumph was short-lived as she was disqualified during the weigh-in on the final day of her event for surpassing the stipulated weight limit by a mere 100 grams. This heartbreaking turn of events led her to announce her retirement from the sport, marking the end of an illustrious career.

Vinesh Phogat is yet to announce her future plans but there are speculations that she might make a return to the mat. Phogat is expected to take back her retirement given that she is still in her prime fitness.
