WWE SmackDown: How 'The Rock' influenced the brand name
It all started in 1998 when The Rock was hyping his match against Ken Shamrock at that year's WrestleMania. The Rock said a word that would not only change the face of sports entertainment but even the English language. A word despite its humble beginnings would cement itself into the vernacular, the word was SMACKDOWN. In 2007, the word SmackDown was formally recognised by Merriam-Webster. But the question is, how did the great one do it?

Contrary to popular belief, The Rock didn't coin the word 'Smackdown'. The word was used by many newspapers and magazines since way back. But the word was not traditionally used as a compound word, people used it as 'Smack Down'. But in 2007, the word was considered as a compound word and was included in the dictionary. Though the word has been in existence since at least the 1930s, it took the power of The Rock to awaken it from decades of dominancy to propel it into pop culture.
