WWE SmackDown made its debut on August 29, 1999. WWE was already enjoying a high-profile viewership and popularity with its first brand RAW when CEO Vince McMahon decided to launch the blue brand. After 20 long years, SmackDown has become one of the biggest wrestling hubs of the world, giving steady competition to its sister brand, RAW in terms of television ratings. After the recent WWE Draft 2019, SmackDown is surely on the top with superstars like Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Shinsuke Nakamura and many more in their draft. Let us look at how the blue brand has evolved over the years.
WWE: SmackDown Evolution
WCW-WWF
Back in the days, WCW (World Championship Wrestling) had a huge impact on the wrestling universe with some great talents in their roster. However, WCW lost its popularity after WWF(originally WWE) managed to emerge as the top-rated wrestling organisation in the world. 'RAW is WAR' became one of the most iconic shows in the 90s but SmackDown finally came in the running in 1999. SmackDown got the complete hold over Thursday nights. It started having superstars like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Jhonson and Stone Cold in their storyline and knocked out the entire glory of WCW from their way. Let us have a look at some WWE Superstars' reactions on top SmackDown moments.
Women’s Wrestling
The blue brand has played a vital role in promoting women’s wrestling. Mae Young and Fabulous Moolah became world-famous women wrestlers when WWE was still not a popular organisation like it is today. According to media reports, SmackDown was initially launched to promote women’s wrestling only but it became a popular brand with wrestling matches of both the genders equally. Even today, SmackDown has some of the best women wrestlers in their roster with Bayley as the Women’s Champion and recently drafted Sasha Banks ‘The Boss’. After a great run of 20 years, WWE SmackDown is reaching new heights every week with great storylines and an incredible roster on the line.
