Flipkart on Friday claims it has seen record growth in the first phase of its festive sales. Flipkart says it saw growth in terms of the number of new customers shopping on its platform. The Walmart-owned e-commerce company says there was nearly 50 per cent growth in terms of the number of new customers shopping during Flipkart's Big Billion Days sale this year, compared to its previous iteration. Flipkart started its festive sale on September 29 and is scheduled to end on October 4, which is today.

"There was almost 50 per cent growth in the number of new customers as compared to BBD 2018. On the seller front, over 40 per cent of transacting sellers during BBD were from tier II and beyond towns. There was a 50 per cent growth in the number of sellers participating in the sale this year compared to last year," Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said.

Krishnamurthy added there has been strong growth across categories like fashion, mobile phones, large appliances, furniture and groceries. Flipkart is now also expected to bring some new, exciting deals and discounts on products across various categories as Diwali is around the corner.

Earlier, Flipkart said it was witnessing strong demand from tier-II and III cities for products such as mobile phones and large appliances during Big Billion Days.

Flipkart said the electronics category on its platform witnessed a growth of over 70 per cent from tier-II cities, with a 100 per cent increase in women shoppers from smaller towns. Mobiles saw the share of consumers picking premium smartphones increased by 97 per cent, contributing to the overall growth of two times in this segment, it added.
