Pakistan blocks Truecaller app without notifying the company

Truecaller has been blocked in Pakistan. Truecaller spokesperson told Republic World that the company is not sure why Pakistani authorities have blocked the app

Truecaller users have been reporting issues using the Swedish caller-identity app in Pakistan. In an email statement to Republic World, Truecaller confirmed the app is indeed not working for some users in Pakistan and the company is currently investigating the matter. According to the statement, Truecaller is not sure why the app is blocked in Pakistan and it did not receive any official communication. Truecaller also reiterated it complies with the rules and regulations in every country it operates in.

"In response to the feedback received from our users in Pakistan that our app is not working for some of them, we would like to reiterate that Truecaller observes and complies with the rules and regulations in every country we operate in. We are not sure why our app is blocked in Pakistan and neither have we received any official communication on it. In spite of follow-ups with the PTA, we haven’t received an official response on the reason for being blocked till date," Truecaller spokesperson told Republic World.

Privacy concerns?

The reason behind Pakistani authorities blocking the Truecaller app is not known. But according to a report by a Pakistani website PhoneWorld, the Truecaller app may be banned in the country over privacy concerns. In the last few days, Truecaller has reportedly stopped working for its users in Pakistan.

"We take the privacy of our users and the integrity of our services, extremely seriously. Truecaller is investigating this matter in-depth," Truecaller spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, the report also includes a screenshot showing the following error message to Truecaller users:

"We're working on it! We are facing technical problems in your region, and are working to resolve it. At the moment, we do not have an estimated time of resolution. Thank you for your patience - Team Truecaller."
