WhatsApp beats TikTok, gains the most number of downloads in Q3 2019

WhatsApp beat TikTok to become the most-downloaded app worldwide in Q3 2019, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower. The facebook-owned instant messaging app received around 184 million installs in the stipulated period. TikTok came second with around 176 million app installs, followed by Messenger, Facebook and Instagram.

WhatsApp secures the top spot

As far as Google Play rankings are concerned, WhatsApp was the most downloaded app worldwide in Q3 2019 with over 156 million installs, followed by Messenger, TikTok, Facebook, and Likee. WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, and Facebook received more than 120 million Google Play installs each in Q3 2019. Likee app received 80 million installs. Meanwhile, online shopping app Club Factory made it to Google Play's list of top 20 apps for the first time. Club Factory also led India's Top Free chart, primarily due to its Diwali sale.

TikTok bounces back

In Q3 2019, TikTok bounced back 13 per cent after two consecutive declining quarters and became the second most downloaded app worldwide. TikTok was the most downloaded app globally on the Apple App Store with around 37 million installs. Following TikTok were YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp and Google Maps. As far as App Store rankings are concerned, TikTok had lost its top spot to YouTube in Q2 2019. However, TikTok managed to beat YouTube and regain its top spot in the third quarter. Netflix saw a 23 per cent increase and to re-entered the top 10 last quarter.
