Facebook wants to prevent revenge porn from spreading on its platform but doesn't want to notify victims about it

As announced in March, social media giant Facebook would use artificial intelligence (AI) among other technologies in order to detect revenge porn even before it's reported. But according to a new report, Facebook doesn't want to communicate its findings with victims. Facebook says it would use artificial intelligence (AI) and image learning tech to detect nudity before anyone reports it.

“If the image or video violates our Community Standards, we will remove it, and in most cases, we will also disable an account for sharing intimate content without permission,” Facebook had said.

However, Facebook did not disclose how the AI would classify images shared consensually and nonconsensually. however, it plans to provide users with an appeal process if it's believed to be a mistake. Once Facebook takes it down, it would create a digital fingerprint to remember the content and detect if an attempt is being made to re-upload the same photo.

“Once content is taken down from the site, we will hash it or create a digital fingerprint of it so we can catch any attempts to upload that image again,” Facebook told the Daily Dot.

However, Facebook is not too keen on notifying users if their naked pictures are upload on the platform without their consent.

As the report argues, despite Facebook helping victims avoid the humiliation of getting their naked pictures exposed to friends and strangers, perpetrators of revenge porn are unlikely to face proper justice. And going by Facebook's previous statement, Facebook would only remove or disable the account of perpetrators, which may not be enough. It remains to be seen how Facebook tackles this situation.

How to report revenge porn

1. If you come across revenge porn or picture of someone that looks like it was shared without their consent, you can report it. All you need to do us use the 'Report' link that appears when you tap on the downward arrow or '…' next to a post.
2. Facebook's community operations team will review the image and remove it if it violates their Community Standards.
3. Facebook will image learning technologies to help prevent further attempts to share the image on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram.
