Apple’s been serious about augmented reality for a while now and it has been making hardware that’s powerful enough to handle AR – better than most Android phones out there. But given the wide expanse of its hardware, Apple has still been unable to make a stong case for AR. All that’s going to change next year as Apple preps its most powerful iPhone ever as well as its long-rumoured AR smart glasses for launch, according to a new Bloomberg report

Apple AR glasses, iPhone with 3D camera incoming

Apple isn’t the first company to toy with the idea of smart AR glasses. Google has tried going down that road – and failed. But while Google Glass was classic nerd tech, you can expect Apple to make its tech a little more mainstream so it would appeal to the average youth as well as hardcore geeks. Moreover, unlike Google’s approach, Apple seems to be going all out on the iPhone as a window into AR as well – which means that as and when this tech arrives, there’ll be an ecosystem that users will be able to bank on.

Apple is reportedly also mulling the idea of bringing a dedicated App Store to its smart AR glasses as well – sort of like the Apple Watch. And with Apple being Apple, we can expect more high-quality apps to make use of all that power and tech. Much like any other Apple product, its smart AR glasses are also expected “to synchronize with a wearer’s iPhone to display things such as texts, emails, maps, and games over the user’s field of vision.” The smart AR glasses are said to have “holographic displays in their lenses.”

Moreover, the next iPhone is said to include a dedicated 3D (depth) camera for hopefully much more improved AR mapping as opposed to Android counterparts like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. High-end Android phones have been coming with Time-of-Flight sensors for a while now, but the lack of compelling apps make them a novelty rather than something that you can put to good use. The next iPhone could change that, and should that be the case, 2020 could finally be the year when we see AR going big in some way – something that tech companies have been trying to do for some time now.
