Apple planning to launch smart display running homeOS as soon as 2025: Report
Apple is reportedly planning to launch a low-end smart display with Apple Intelligence in 2025. This smart display could be powered by the new homeOS.
Apple is reportedly working on launching a new smart home device, a HomePod with a display, that could arrive as soon as 2025. This smart display by the company will running a new operating system by the company, dubbed as the homeOS.
For the unversed, Apple has two devices in its smart home ecosystem right now -- Apple TV that runs tvOS and the HomePod. While the company has been consistent in rolling out upgrades to its Apple TV lineup, it has failed to provide meaningful upgrades to its HomePod lineup. But that might change soon, when the company introduces a smart display. It would also help it compete against Amazon 's Echo Show series and Google's Nest Hub lineup, both of which have a strong presence in the smart display market.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that Apple is reportedly planning to launch 'a low-end smart display for using FaceTime and controlling home appliances' as soon as next year. The product is being developed under code-named J490.
Gurman says that the company is also working on a 'tabletop device' code-named J595 that will combine a robotic limb with a large iPad-like display and may be priced at around $1,000.
Both these devices will have on-device Apple Intelligence in the core, just like the company's other products including iPhones, iPads and Macs. The company's existing devices, HomePod Mini and the second-generation HomePod, lack the hardware required to run on-device Apple Intelligence.
Beyond Apple Intelligence, two devices will run a new operating system being developed by the company dubbed as the homeOS. This will be in line with the company's policy of having a dedicated operating system for every major product in its portfolio. For the unversed, Apple has iOS for iPhones, iPadOS for iPhones, macOS for Macs and MacBooks, tvOS for Apple TV devices, watchOS for the Apple Watch lineup, and visionOS for the Apple Vision Pro.
Notably, while the report tips the low-end Apple display to arrive next year, there is no word on when Apple's tabletop device with a robotic arm will arrive in the market.
