After buying Fossil’s smartwatch tech and a portion of its R&D team for $40 million, Google parent company Alphabet may be looking to acquire Fitbit in its fresh attempt to make Wear OS relevant again. Alphabet seems to be in the midst of negotiations with Fitbit, according to a Reuters report, and while financials of any possible deal likely to take place are unknown, - it’s also uncertain, as of now, if the deal will go through at all - it’s certain that Google isn’t giving up on its smartwatch/smart wearable dream just yet.

US-based Fitbit is a popular brand – it's been one of the pioneers when it comes to fitness bands and tracking. Over the years, it has launched several compelling products. But, over the years, competition has also caught up and offering as compelling products – if not better – at even more affordable prices. Fitbit has been previously reported to have been exploring a sale. Should Google acquire Fitbit, the move should help boost their efforts at building something unique and more competitive. Google has been long-rumoured to be working on a Pixel smartwatch but we’re yet to see one – hopefully something will happen should the Fitbit acquisition fall into place.

Which is something that was also expected after Google acquired Fossil’s smartwatch tech and a portion of its R&D team in January. “Wearables, built for wellness, simplicity, personalization and helpfulness, have the opportunity to improve lives by bringing users the information and insights they need quickly, at a glance. The addition of Fossil Group’s technology and team to Google demonstrates our commitment to the wearables industry by enabling a diverse portfolio of smartwatches and supporting the ever-evolving needs of the vitality-seeking, on-the-go consumer,” Stacey Burr, president of product management for Google’s Wear OS, had said announcing the acquisition.

Fossil is known for its hybrid smartwatches that blend smart features with more traditional watch design, and it is said to be the keeper of a “new product innovation that’s not yet hit the market,” possibly acquired from Misfit. Google maybe looking to scale it for its own good, but it is yet to make any sort of announcement on any sort of progress in this regard.
