Microsoft’s next high-end gaming console is reportedly codenamed Anaconda. Anaconda, said to be successor of the Xbox One X will be one of two consoles that Microsoft is reportedly working on with the other, codenamed Lockhart, being a more affordable offering on the lines of the Xbox One S. Both Anaconda and Lockhart Xbox consoles are reportedly part of Microsoft’s Scarlett project and are expected to launch sometime in 2020.

The Anaconda Xbox, as mentioned earlier, will be successor of the Xbox One X – aka Project Scorpio – and will resultantly be the more powerful of the two consoles that Microsoft is working on. This invariably means new and improved hardware – processor, graphics – including faster SSD storage under the hood. The current-generation Xbox One X is the most powerful gaming console in the world right now, and it isn’t even a next-generation device but a mid-cycle refresh. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft has in store with regards to its true next-generation console.

It isn’t clear if Anaconda refers to the actual console or the dev kit at this point of time. The Xbox One X dev kit, to recall, was codenamed Chuckwalla.

The other console, aka Lockhart, is said to be the more affordable one of the two consoles but it will reportedly pack hardware comparable or even slightly more powerful to the existing Xbox One X.

Both these consoles should theoretically be compatible with Microsoft’s existing backward compatible Xbox and Xbox 360 games, and Xbox One titles, a strategy that the company has employed to open its past games for next-generation consoles as a means to overcome the dearth of exclusive titles.

Since Microsoft is yet to formally announce specifics about either of the two consoles, it is advised that you take this piece of information with a pinch of salt. What we do know is that Microsoft is working on something as we speak. The Redmond giant, during its E3 2018 keynote had confirmed that it was "deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles, where we will once again deliver on our commitment to deliver the benchmark of console gaming."

In other news, Microsoft is also reportedly working on an update to the Xbox One S with a slightly tweaked disk-less design, expected to release in early 2019.
