READ | First phase of Mumbai-Pune Virgin Hyperloop One expected to commence before the end of 2019

Earlier in June, we saw a report that construction of the first phase of Virgin Hyperloop One's proposed Mumbai-Pune hyperloop plan is expected to commence by 2019. According to reports, work on Mumbai-Pune Hyperloop is likely to begin by December 2019. Students and professors from the IIT Bombay will volunteer to help in the project, in addition to the Government of Maharashtra and Virgin Hyperloop One.

The distance between Mumbai and Pune is about 150 kilometres. By road, it takes more than 3 hours to complete the journey. The Hyperloop project aims to cover the same distance between 25 minutes. The proposed plan is expected to benefit more than 25 million travellers across both cities. Iy would also connect Navi Mumbai Internation Airport to Pune.

The first phase will reportedly cover 15 kilometres demonstration track. However, the construction is said to complete by 2023. Virgin Hyperloop One will use private investment of $500 million to work on the first phase of the development.

The Hyperloop project moves passengers and cargo faster than traditional methods of transport. The Hyperloop tube vehicle accelerates, courtesy of electric propulsion in a low-pressure tube and floats above the track using magnetic levitation. Essentially, Hyperloop pods can travel at airline speeds with the help of ultra-low aerodynamic drag. Virgin Hyperloop One is said to make 50 rides per day with each pod carrying 28 passengers at a time.
