American cops seem to have mastered a new tactic to catch the new age Amazon box thieves. According to the Associated Press report, Jersey City cops have been using fake Amazon packages to target thieves.

Many Amazon packages are dropped at the door when the customer is not at home and that has led to many to somehow believe they can pick and run. In order to catch these culprits, Police is now using fake Amazon packages to lure thieves. The "Amazon Package" will indeed contain a GPS system that will help the police to track down the thief.

Amazon and Jersey City cops are together in this. The e-commerce giant is not only providing equipment but also its own theft reports. After combining those reports with crime data, cops have been conducting string operation across the city’s most at-risk areas. Reports denote that these operations have been fairly successful.

One of the packages moved within three minutes of placing on someone front porch, leading to the suspect’s arrest. At the time of writing this, it is not clear what charges the person is facing. Members of the Jersey City Police department agreed to volunteer for having the equipment and packages provided by Amazon placed at their homes.

In 2016, mobile phones worth over Rs 10 lakh were stolen from Amazon warehouse in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra by its five contractual employees. They were all booked under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and Section 381 (Theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master).
