If you are a BSNL mobile subscriber in the Karnataka circle, then the state-led telco has now started issuing 4G SIM cards to prepaid subscribers finally after an almost interminable wait. This development means that the official rollout of 4G services of BSNL is now only about a matter of time. With this, BSNL’s Karnataka circle joins the likes of other circles such as Kochi in India where the 4G network connectivity is slated to go live and regions where new SIM cards have been issued. Post purchasing the BSNL 4G SIM cards, you could check your smartphones for the current-gen LTE connectivity standards.
Now, in case you are a new BSNL subscriber; or are desirous of finally checking out BSNL’s LTE connectivity within your handsets, you would be required to purchase a new 4G SIM-card in exchange for your current 3G SIM modules. This can be done at the nearest telephone exchange. This process involves submission of your Know-Your-Customer (KYC) documents such as the Aadhaar, or other government issued ID cards. Charges for the new SIM-card would be Rs 100.

3G services would continue for your 4G-compatible SIM cards till the wireless technology connectivity service rolls out. At this juncture, it is worth noting that plans custom-made for 4G could vary and even be integrated to current offerings (present subscription plans) that the telco offers. You could check out an authorized center for recharge plans.
The latest development should also theoretically increase BSNL’s 4G reach (after the service goes live) throughout the state of Karnataka, and not restricted to just the tier-1 regions. The recharge schemes here, especially the prepaid packages should compete with the likes of incumbent telcos and Reliance Jio as far as customer retention (and possibly onboarding new subscribers) is concerned.

At this point in time, all major telcos in India have been intensively doling out custom prepaid recharge packages that majorly offer long validity along with a host of 4G data, free + unlimited calling, and more. While rumour mills have been equating this new trend in the Indian telecom industry with that of potential competition with Reliance Jio’s offers, we think that the end result of the newer prepaid “package schemes” only benefits subscribers at the end of the day.
