With Interconnect Usage Charge (IUC) being the focal point, it is worth understanding that Reliance Jio has already been levying IUC on customers making calls to non-Jio numbers. In this regard, the telco has also launched custom all-in-one recharge plans that make IUC free. The Rs 333 plan is a popular all-in-one plan here. But does this make IUC totally free?

The Rs 333 plan

The Jio Rs 333 all-in-one plan offers as much as 1000 minutes of IUC free. If you are a Jio subscriber, do note that the validity of this plan is 56 days. You would have to make do with 1000 IUC minutes for the entire duration of 56 days. This could be potentially less for subscribers regularly making voice calls to other numbers. For Jio numbers, calls would remain free.

Other benefits of the Rs 333 plan include the likes of 2GB data per day along with free SMS messages. Validity of this scheme is 56 days – only a tad short of two complete months. This looks custom-made for subscribers preferring to speak with their loved ones who also have a Jio connection. For other numbers (calls to), the 1000 minutes IUC could be sufficient if the voice calls are over short distances, rather than long ones.

Other telecom operators, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, and BSNL have not been levying IUC – mandated by TRAI to be 6 paise per minute, on customers making calls to “other” numbers. Hence, Jio subscribers could even choose to shell out 6 paise for each minute of their voice call to non-Jio numbers across India. For now, there is every possibility that IUC charges could be done away with, as TRAI is contemplating a zero termination charge/Bill-and-keep regime to come to the fore from 1 January 2020.
