Now that AirPower is dead and with no official wireless charger in sight, Apple may be looking at the next batch of iPhones to wirelessly charge its new AirPods and also other Qi-compliant devices. Long-term Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has confirmed that the 2019 iPhone or iPhone 11 (or whatever Apple decides to call its next iPhone) will support two-way wireless charging - similar to Samsung’s Power Share feature found inside the Galaxy S10 phones.

“We expect the new 2H19 iPhone models will support two-way wireless charging. Though the iPhone is not the first high-end smartphone to be equipped with two-way wireless charging, this new function could make it more convenient for users to charge the new AirPods and create a better integrated user experience of the iPhone and AirPods,” according to Kuo

The analyst adds that the two-way wireless charging feature will give way to bigger batteries – while the iPhone XS Max successor is said to pack a 10 to 15 per cent bigger battery, the iPhone XS successor could see a 20 to 25 per cent jump in battery capacity. The iPhone XR successor is meanwhile said to gain the least – with a reported 0 to 5 per cent increase over the predecessor.

While Compeq is said to supply the battery boards, STMicro will reportedly supply the two-way wireless charging controller for the next iPhone.

Reverse charging isn’t a new feature – Samsung has it, and Huawei had it before Samsung. But reverse wireless charging remains largely a gimmick since charging is very slow, as opposed to conventional methods and wireless chargers. Apple’s is also likely to follow suit although it could be useful while topping the newly launched AirPods with optional wireless charging case.

Apple launched three new iPhones last year and it will be looking to do the same in 2019 as well. Apple is expected to launch its new iPhones in September. One of the iPhone 11s, possibly the iPhone 11 Max, will reportedly come with three rear cameras. A faster processor and possibly faster Face ID will be also in the cards.
