iPhone 11 will reportedly come with three rear cameras, iPhone 11R to come with two

Apple is already hard at work on the next iPhone. Even more so since the current batch of high-end iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, have failed to set any sort of sales record for Cupertino. Even Apple’s seemingly budget-centric iPhone XR has had poor sales. Leading Apple to cut short its quarterly sales forecast, and possibly to look forward to its next iPhone to return to form.
Only recently, the first purported renders of the alleged iPhone 11 were spotted online, giving an early look at what could be Apple’s next iPhone: the iPhone 11, or whatever Apple decides to call its next iPhone, could come with a triple camera setup. Now a new WSJ report has corroborated the existence of three rear cameras on the next iPhone, although it also adds that the feature would be part the highest-end model, possibly the iPhone 11 Max.
The iPhone 11 may or may not have triple rear cameras. The current-generation iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max both have the same dual rear cameras. The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, in fact, share many hardware features with each other. The biggest difference comes in the form of size. While the iPhone XS is a 5.8-inch iPhone, the iPhone XS Max has a larger 6.5-inch display.
Should the iPhone 11 Max pack three cameras, and the smaller iPhone 11 sport two or less, it would set greater differentiation – beyond just size -- between the two upcoming iPhones. Having said that, rumor has it that the third camera in the triple camera setup would be a time-of-flight camera to help assist in 3D depth mapping among other things. Making the iPhone 11 Max triple camera setup useful for only a select group of people. The iPhone 11 may not be missing out much in that case.
Apple is also looking to refresh the iPhone XR with a new iPhone 11R model that would pack a dual camera system, according to the report. The iPhone XR notably has the same primary rear camera as the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, but the absence of a secondary camera means it can’t do telephoto and neither can it shoot portraits of anything else but humans. With two cameras, the iPhone 11R could become an even more compelling package considering that it is still expected to cost less than the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11R. Apple will reportedly stick with LCD again, which means no OLED for iPhone 11R like the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max.
