LG G7 ThinQ will get Android Pie update by March 2019

The LG G7 ThinQ was later launched as the LG G7+ ThinQ in markets like India

LG is a little late to the Pie party in comparison to rivals like Samsung but as they say, better late than never. LG has announced that its current-generation flagship phone, the LG G7 ThinQ, will get the Android 9 Pie update in Q1 2019. Sadly, this piece of information applies to the South Korean market and there is no clarity when the update will be rolled out in other markets.

The LG G7 ThinQ was launched in 2018. The ThinQ in the name seemingly corresponds to the device’s AI prowess. The LG G7 ThinQ was later launched as the LG G7+ ThinQ in markets like India. The LG G7+ ThinQ is simply the LG G7 ThinQ with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The LG G7 ThinQ comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The rest of the specifications remain the same. It is also not clear if LG will be rolling out the Android Pie update to both the LG G7 ThinQ and the LG G7+ ThinQ simultaneously.

LG phones rock the company’s custom skin on top of Android. But while rivals like Samsung are pushing for faster software updates, LG seems stuck in the past. Even though it is finally out with some sort of timeline, it does not say exactly when its most high-end device as of now, will be updated to the latest software update. Also, the update is limited in roll-out now, and there is no word when it will be made available in other markets.

Samsung, on the contrary, is jumping the gun in some markets and rolling out the Android Pie update to select devices ahead of schedule. A broader Android Pie update for devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is expected in mid-January. The company is already out with the Android Pie beta for devices like the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+ letting users access its new One UI software well in advance, before going stable. Not just its most recent devices, even the one-year old Samsung Galaxy S8 line-up will reportedly have access to Android Pie beta soon.
