Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek launched two new gaming-focused mobile chips, aka Helio G90 and Helio G90T, on Tuesday. Not only were these mobile chips announced (first) in India, MediaTek says they’ve both been designed after taking extensive feedback from their India R&D. This maybe the first time an international chip maker has done such a thing, which isn’t even surprising now considering how important India has become as a burgeoning mobile market – and a burgeoning mobile gaming market.
The announcement comes just two days after Tencent Games and PUBG Corp launched PUBG Mobile Lite for the Indian market – further reiterating how important India has become as a burgeoning mobile-only consumer base for global brands.
MediaTek’s Helio G90 and Helio G90T have seemingly been designed to bring high-end gaming experiences to mid-tier devices – something on the lines of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 730G. MediaTek, in fact, was quite vocal about how they’re pitching the Helio G90 and Helio G90T straight up against Qualcomm’s new mid-tier SoCs – the Helio G90T is claimed to outperform the SD730 by 3 per cent and the SD730G by 7 per cent basis of Antutu scores. The Helio G90 and Helio G90T are also claimed to offer up to 34 per cent faster game launch time than competition.
In terms of core specs, MediaTek’s new chips pack an octa-core CPU with ARM Cortex-A76 and A55 cores clocked at up to 2.05GHz, paired with a Mali G76 GPU clocked at up to 800MHz. These support up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to a maximum of four rear cameras including support for a 64MP shooter.
MediaTek is really touting its HyperEngine technology that has been designed from ground up to boost gaming performance – the Helio G90 and Helio G90T will be the first mobile chips with the tech packed in. There’s also an intelligent network prediction engine inside these mobile chips that will be able to automatically switch to LTE sensing when Wi-Fi quality is low.
Phones powered by MediaTek’s new gaming-focused Helio G90 mobile chips will arrive later this year and Xiaomi will be the first OEM to launch a phone with Helio G90T processor in India. Although details about this phone are scarce, it is possible that we’re looking at the same 64MP quad-camera phone that Xiaomi has recently started teasing for the Indian market.
