Taiwanese smartphone brand Asus could be working on their upcoming Zenfone 6 lineup. Much like this year’s Zenfone 5, Zenfone 5 Lite and Zenfone 5Z, Asus is expected to announce multiple handsets under the Zenfone 6 moniker at MWC 2019 early next year. But one thing nobody would have imagined is that Asus may be planning to opt for some drastic changes to their design elements this time around.

Asus could be inching closer to finalising a new and slightly odd placement for the notch. Well, notches are no longer unknown territory since most of the brands these days have been opting for one. What changes, in fact, is the size. Some phones like Google Pixel 3 XL have a bigger notch whereas devices like OnePlus 6T and Realme 2 Pro have a smaller, water-drop notch design to offer.

Asus Zenfone 6 is expected to have a bubble notch. However, Asus is more likely to put it on the top right corner. Usually, notches are found in the centre, right above the display. But it may not necessarily be the case with upcoming Asus Zenfone 6. In what appears to be a leaked video revealing Asus Zenfone 6’s design prototype, the phone can be seen housing a weirdly-positioned notch, which is intriguing.

The hands-on video appeared online, courtesy of an Italian blog HDblog. It also goes on to show what it claims are the live pictures of the handset. In fact, the phone could have more changes than a new notch placement. For starters, the phone is expected to flaunt extremely narrow bezels and curved back and corners. The handset is likely to retain a 3.5mm headphone jack unlike the latest iPhones, Google Pixels and OnePlus 6T. It should continue to offer a USB Type-C port at the bottom along with speaker grills.

Flipping the phone reveals a protruding camera unit and a fingerprint reader. It seems like Asus is not planning on implementing in-display fingerprint reader technology on their phones anytime soon. This year with the Zenfone 5, Asus decided to employ a reflective back, which might have given the phone a premium look but ended up making it hugely prone to fingerprint smudges.

If rumours are to be believed, this is certainly a design change we haven't seen before and it will be interesting to know Asus’s take on this new notch placement if they decide to go with it at all.
