One smartphone maker’s loss is another one’s gain. While Samsung deals with the Galaxy Fold debacle on hand, OnePlus is all set to swoop right in to launch the first smartphone with UFS 3.0 storage. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold was packed with UFS 3.0 storage but before it was officially launched, multiple reviewers had serious issues with the device. With its launch now pushed, OnePlus 7 could be the first phone to come with the ultra-smooth UFS 3.0 storage.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau mentioned about the UFS 3.0 storage upgrade through a Tweet, as has been the case with all updates and teasers concerning the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. Interestingly, Lau mentioned the upgrade was for the OnePlus 7 Series, which means that the OnePlus 7 could also have the same upgrade. Many talked about how OnePlus 7 Pro was being promoted in a huge way whereas not much was being said about the OnePlus 7, this should halt that train of thought, at least for the time being.

Now let’s talk about the actual upgrade, what really is UFS 3.0 storage. The UFS 3.0 is the latest Universal Flash Storage (UFS) standard announced by the JEDEC. The UFS 3.0 standard has been developed for mobile applications that require high performance with low power consumption.

According to Samsung, the new UFS 3.0 standard doubles the bandwidth from the current UFS 2.1 standard. It’s also more power efficient with a new 2.5V power supply mode that enables lower power consumption with support for the latest NAND technology. Simply put, this means that storage solutions based on this standard will be faster while requiring less power.

OnePlus will be unveiling the two smartphones on the 14th of May. Most of the details are already out through leaks, <> as is the case with all important launches. This is going to be an important launch for OnePlus as it seems like the smartphone company is trying to make its way into the premium segment as the OnePlus 7 Pro price in India is tipped to start at Rs. 49999. It remains to be seen what’s new with these devices and how they are received, considering OnePlus is popular in India for being a high performing smartphone at an affordable price.
