Samsung Galaxy M10, Galaxy M20 launched with Infinity-V display, price starts at Rs 7,990

Samsung launched the entry-level Galaxy M10 and the mid-tier Galaxy M20 smartphones in India on Monday. The Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 mark the global debut of Samsung’s all-new Galaxy M-series -- an online-only series of affordable smartphones that will ideally replace the company’s Galaxy On line-up in the days to come. While the Galaxy M10 will start at Rs 7,990, the Galaxy M20 will be available for buying starting at Rs 10,990 exclusively from Amazon India and Samsung’s own e-store from February 5.  

The Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 have been designed from ground up for young millennials and can be considered as Samsung’s answer to the likes of Xiaomi, a Chinese company that took over its Indian market share in Q4 2017 and continues to dominate still, holding as much as a five-point lead (over Samsung) as of Q4 2019. The Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 bring many industry firsts for Samsung including its first Infinity-V notch display and a whopping 5,000mAh battery under the hood, which is a first for Samsung in the under Rs 20,000 price bracket. 

The Galaxy M-series also marks the global debut of Samsung’s newly announced Exynos 7904 processor, a chipset that has seemingly been customized for the Indian consumer needs.  

Samsung Galaxy M10, Galaxy M20 design 

Although both the Samsung Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 are made entirely out of plastic, they feel solid. They are very thin and light as well, which is impressive for a device like the Galaxy M20 that packs a massive 5,000mAh battery inside. Samsung is using glossy plastic here, which means the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 look like they are made of glass from afar. Also, they feel nice to the touch thanks to this finish. Both the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 will be available in a choice of two colour options: blue and black. 

The main USP of the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20, according to Samsung, is their Infinity-V display. At its annual developer conference in November last year, Samsung had announced that all its future devices will be characterized by Infinity-U, Infinity-V, Infinity-O and New Infinity-style screens. The Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 mark the global debut of Samsung’s Infinity-V display, which is essentially Samsung’s take on the waterdrop/teardrop-style notch found in competing products from Xiaomi (Redmi Note 7) and Realme (Realme 2 Pro). Samsung is also using software enhancements to make its Infinity-V display stand out in the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20. 

The Galaxy M10, because it is an entry-level phone, does not come with a fingerprint scanner (there’s face unlock). Also, it uses the aging micro-USB standard for charging and data syncing. The Galaxy M20 has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and charges via USB Type-C.

The Galaxy M20 comes with a 6.3-inch Infinity-V TFT LCD display while the Galaxy M10 has a smaller 6.2-inch screen. While the Galaxy M20 has a 1080p+ screen resolution, the Galaxy M10 maxes out at 720p+. Samsung does not say if the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 have any sort of protective covering on top, but both the devices come with ambient light sensor, a feature that Samsung has been known to omit in its budget devices. 

The Galaxy M20 is powered by Samsung’s new Exynos 7904 processor (octa-core with two Cortex A73 cores that run at 1.8GHz and six Cortex A53 cores at 1.6 GHz) with up to 4GB RAM and up to 64GB storage which is also expandable via a dedicated micro-SD card slot. The Galaxy M10 is meanwhile powered by a 1.6Ghz octa-core Exynos 7870 processor with up to 3GB RAM and up to 32GB storage, again expandable via a dedicated card slot. While the Galaxy M20 comes with a 5,000mAh battery with fast charging support, the Galaxy M10 uses a smaller 3,400mAh battery (with no fast charging). 

Both the phones run Android 8.1 Oreo-based Samsung Experience 9.5 UI which is different from the One UI found inside the company’s more premium Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices. Samsung is expected to roll out Android Pie software for the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 sometime in August. 

On to the cameras, both the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20, come with dual rear cameras of similar resolution (but with different sensors) -- a 13MP primary sensor with f/1.9 aperture and a secondary 5MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture. Both the phones support Samsung’s Live Focus feature. The Galaxy M20 further comes with an 8MP front camera, while the Galaxy M10 tones it down to 5MP in the selfie department.     

Samsung Galaxy M10, Galaxy M20 India price and availability 

Both the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 will be available in two configurations and two colours, blue and black. The Galaxy M10 will start at Rs 7,990 for the base 2GB RAM and 16GB storage variant, going all the way to Rs 8,990 for the top-end variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. The Galaxy M20 will start at Rs 10,990 for the base 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant, going all the way to Rs 12,990 for the top-end variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Both the phones will be available for buying in India from February 5.
