Xiaomi beat Samsung to become top smartphone company in India in 2018: Counterpoint

Chinese smartphone Xiaomi continues to lead India's smartphone market share followed by Samsung, Vivo, Oppo and Micromax. One of the key highlights of the report, overall smartphone shipments crossed 330 million units with smartphones seizing almost 44% of the total volume in 2018.

According to Counterpoint, Chinese smartphone Xiaomi continues to lead India's smartphone market share followed by Samsung, Vivo, Oppo and Micromax. One of the key highlights of the report, overall smartphone shipments crossed 330 million units with smartphones seizing almost 44% of the total volume in 2018.

Apart from that, feature phones grew faster than smartphones during the year 2018, led by Jio Phone. At the end of 2018, both the categories smartphones and feature phones witnessed two new market leaders in the form of Xiaomi and Jio, respectively.

During the CY 2018, Xiaomi secured 28 per cent market share, resulting in 9 per cent rise from 19 per cent during the CY 2017. All other brands including Samsung, Vivo, Oppo and Micromax have retained their market share from the CY 2018. Samsung recorded 24 per cent followed by Vivo at 10 per cent, Oppo at 8 per cent and Micromax at 5 per cent.

During the Q4 2018, Xiaomi controlled 27 per cent market share which increased 2 per cent over the same period last year. Meanwhile, Samsung's market share went down to 22 per cent from 23 per cent during the same period last year. Vivo's market share increased from 6 per cent 9 per cent Oppo's market share saw a rise from 6 per cent to 7 per cent.

During the Q4 2018, Realme emerged as a new smartphone brand to obtain 8 per cent market share, more than Oppo's.

As far as India's feature phone shipments are concerned, Reliance Jio captured 38 per cent market share during the CY 2018, which is 27 per cent increase over 11 per cent from the CY 2017. Samsung's shipments took a big hit, falling down from 21 per cent during the CY 2017 to 12 per cent during the CY 2017.

During the CY 2018, Reliance Jio tops the charts followed by Samsung, itel at 8 per cent, Nokia HMD at 7 per cent and Lava at 7 per cent.
