The Redmi Note 8 Pro, launched in India on Wednesday, is a thorough update to the Redmi Note 7 Pro in every sense of the word. It has a new design, new hardware and more memory configurations – there are some India-specific innovations as well here. A lot has changed on the inside and out, and yet, one thing has remained constant. Xiaomi’s aggressive pricing. Even with all the extra bells and whistles, the Redmi Note 8 Pro still starts at Rs 14,999 (the Redmi Note 7 Pro was launched at a starting price of Rs 13,999) but that’s also because Xiaomi is kicking things off with more RAM – which starts at 6GB in the case of the Redmi Note 8 Pro (the Redmi Note 7 Pro came with 4GB RAM as base). So, I guess, it all adds up.

Here’s a step by step breakdown of the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 7 Pro to understand what’s in store:

  • Both the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 8 boast of Xiaomi’s aura design scheme. There’s Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back in both the phones. But the Redmi Note 8 is more premium. The Redmi Note 8 Pro gives you a choice of three fancier/flashier gradients - Gamma Green, Halo White and Shadow Black. The phone has a 4-sided curved rear, and a glossy frame that’s made of plastic. The Redmi Note 7 Pro now looks like a much more toned-down affair with a relatively flatter body. Both the phones have rear-mounted fingerprint scanners.

  • Both the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 7 Pro have P2i coating which makes them resistant to accidental splashes. The Redmi Note 8 Pro kicks things up a notch by also getting IP52-certification for limited water and dust resistance.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 6.53-inch 1080p+ IPS LCD display with Xiaomi’s dot-notch. The phone uses chip on film technology that allows Xiaomi to greatly reduce the chin on this one – resulting in a screen-to-body ratio of 91.4-per cent. The display also supports HDR. The Redmi Note 7 Pro has a smaller 6.39-inch 1080p+ display with Xiaomi’s dot notch.

  • Under the hood, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a MediaTek Helio G90T processor paired with up to 8GB RAM and up to 128GB storage which is also expandable via a dedicated micro-SD card slot. There’s also liquid cooling for seemingly cooler extended gameplay. The Redmi Note 7 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor paired with up to 6GB RAM and up to 128GB storage which is also expandable via a hybrid micro-SD card slot.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes in 6GB RAM/64GB, 6GB/128GB and 8GB/128GB configurations. The Redmi Note 7 Pro comes in 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB configurations.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro India variant also answers to hands-free Alexa – in addition to another voice assistant.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a quad camera setup on the rear consisting of a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP depth camera, and a 2MP macro lens. On the front, it has a 20MP camera. The Redmi Note 7 Pro has dual rear cameras consisting of a 48MP main camera and a 5MP depth sensor. On the front, the Redmi Note 7 Pro has a 13MP camera.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a 4,500mAh battery with 18W fast charging through USB Type-C. Xiaomi will be bundling a fast charger in the box this time. The Redmi Note 7 Pro packs a 4,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging through USB Type-C (no fast charger in the box).
