Xiaomi may be planning to release a new phone in January 2019 with a 48MP camera! Xiaomi co-founder and president Bin Lin posted a close up picture of a smartphone on his Weibo profile teasing a 48MP rear shooter. Bin described this mysterious phone as “not bad” and said that he is using it for a few weeks.
This has led to a widespread speculation that Xiaomi is readying a new phone to launch to compete with the likes of Huawei Mate 20 Pro. To recall, the Mate 20 has a 40MP sensor alongside a 20MP ultrawide sensor and an 8MP telephoto sensor.

There are only two sensors available out there to support such camera specifications. Back in July, Sony IMX586 sensor was announced, which is a quad Bayer sensor. In October, another 48MP sensor was announced - Samsung Bright GM1.

These sensors make use of a technique called Pixel Binning, which is supposed to enhance a picture quality. What’s more, these sensors also enable for high-quality digital zoom, courtesy of their high pixel count.
In spite of their availability, Huawei went on to opt for a dedicated telephoto module with regards to its Mate 20 Pro smartphone. However, it remains to be seen how well does Xiaomi implement a 48MP sensor. But no other information is currently available.
