Xiaomi to launch a new 'Play' smartphone ahead of Christmas

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is gearing up to launch a new smartphone called Xiaomi Play at its home turf. Xiaomi Play will become official on December 24. The confirmation has originated from one of Xiaomi’s official channels on Weibo.

Xiaomi Play could emerge as a whole new series aimed at mobile gamers. However, we are awaiting more details on that front. But the report has it that Xiaomi Play could be the first smartphone to fall under the company’s Play series aimed at smartphone gamers. Xiaomi Play could also be a new series after the company has earned quite a name for itself with the existing Mi and Redmi series smartphones.

Another speculation is that Xiaomi Play is, in fact, a rebranded Poco F1 that was launched in India in August. Xiaomi has not revealed anything concrete at the time of writing this. However, the ‘Play’ branding suggests that it’s likely to aim mobile gamers. As for the branding ‘Play,’ Xiaomi might also have something in store related to music.

Another Chinese brand Honor recently unveiled Honor Play, which is aimed at mobile gamers. That’s why reports have been speculating that Xiaomi Play might also have something similar to offer. Priced at Rs 15,999, Honor Play has certain game-centric features like GPU Turbo to optimise graphics performance when it comes to playing games.

In related news, Xiaomi may be planning to release a new smartphone next month featuring a 48MP rear camera! Xiaomi co-founder and president Bin Lin posted a picture on Weibo, teasing a 48MP smartphone camera. Bin also described it as “not bad.” He also said that he has been using it for a few weeks.
